First-Time Sailing in Greece: A Complete Beginner’s Guide

By YachtSailing Editorial Team · 7 min read ·

In short

You don’t need any experience to sail Greece on a crewed catamaran. Here’s what a day actually looks like, how to choose your region, what to pack and how to make a first trip effortless.

Never sailed before? A first sailing holiday in Greece can be one of the easiest, most memorable trips you’ll ever take - as long as you go crewed. With a professional captain and hostess on board, you need zero sailing experience; you just show up and enjoy it.

This guide walks you through everything a first-timer wonders about: how a day unfolds, which region to choose, what to pack, and how to pick the right catamaran.

You really don’t need experience

On a crewed charter, the captain sails the boat, plans the route around the weather and handles every technical detail. The hostess cooks and keeps things running. Your only job is to relax, swim and explore. It’s the difference between “learning to sail” and “having a sailing holiday” - and for a first trip, the second is what most people want.

What a typical day looks like

Mornings are unhurried: coffee and breakfast on deck, then a short, scenic sail to the day’s first swim stop - a quiet cove reached before the crowds. Lunch on board or in a harbour taverna, an afternoon of swimming, reading or snorkelling, then into a pretty port for the evening. Dinner ashore or aboard, a nightcap under the stars, and sleep rocked gently at anchor. Repeat, at your own pace.

Choose the right region

For a first trip, the calmer, closer Saronic Gulf is ideal - short hops, sheltered water and pretty historic islands like Hydra and Poros. If you want the iconic Cyclades scenery and don’t mind livelier winds, the Cyclades are spectacular; your captain simply routes around the meltemi.

What to pack

Pack light and soft - a soft holdall, not a hard suitcase, so it stows easily. Bring swimwear, a couple of light layers for cooler evenings, a hat and high-SPF sunscreen, deck-friendly soft-soled shoes or sandals, a light jacket, any medication, and a good book. You’ll live in swimwear and shorts most of the day.

Seasickness and comfort

Catamarans sail flat and barely roll at anchor, so seasickness is uncommon - but if you’re prone to it, choose the sheltered Saronic, sit up on deck in fresh air, and bring bands or tablets just in case. Tell your captain, and they’ll keep the route smooth.

How to choose your boat

Match the yacht to your group: cabins for everyone (usually one per couple), enough space to spread out, and a layout that suits you. Our team is happy to recommend the right catamaran for your numbers and budget - see the full fleet to get a feel for the options.

Good to know

Do I need to know how to sail?

+

No. On a crewed charter the captain does all the sailing and the hostess handles the catering, so no experience is needed from guests.

Which is the best region for a first sailing trip?

+

The Saronic Gulf - short, sheltered crossings and pretty historic islands close to Athens make it the gentlest introduction to sailing in Greece.

Will I get seasick?

+

It’s uncommon on a flat-sailing catamaran, especially in the sheltered Saronic. If you’re prone to it, stay on deck in fresh air and bring bands or tablets.

What should I pack for a sailing holiday?

+

A soft bag, swimwear, light layers for the evening, a hat, high-SPF sunscreen, soft-soled shoes and any medication. You’ll spend most of the day in swimwear.
